Top 10 Tips for Super Bowl Betting Strategy

10 TIPS TO BETTING SUPER BOWL XLV

The biggest betting day of the year is upon us – Super Bowl 45. Kicking off on Feb. 6, 2011, billions will watch and wager on two of the most historical football teams in NFL history, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers.

But not every sports fan is well versed in the odds, stats and history that come with betting on the big game. That’s why Bodog’s online sportsbook is giving you a betting guide to ensure you get paid like a starting quarterback on Super Bowl Sunday.

  1. Do Your Research
    • There have been NFL spreads on the Super Bowl since the first one way back in 1967. This means you’ve got an endless amount of history to check out before you make your Super Bowl bet.
  2. Don’t Overlook the Underdogs
    • Only two favorites, the 06’ Steelers and the 07’ Colts, have covered the spread in the last nine Super Bowls. Also, the New England dynasty only covered the spread once, way back in 02’ when they upset the St. Louis Rams.
  3. Defense Wins Championships
    • In 2008, the Giants took the trophy by holding the Patriots to 14 points. In 2009, the Steelers won by controlling Kurt Warner and the high-scoring Arizona offense. Last year, the Saints won the Super Bowl by holding the Indianapolis offense to a net of 10 points.
  4. Lower Your Offensive Expectations
    • Five of the last six Super Bowls went “Under” the total, so try not to get too hyped up for a high scoring contest.
  5. Factor in Experience
    • The Steelers have been here before so they are unlikely to be overwhelmed or nervous when they hit the field on Sunday. There are only two Packers with Super Bowl experience, and they both lost the big game in their only appearance.
  6. Look At How Green Bay Got Here
    • The chances of a team moving away from what got them here is hard to imagine. Packers made it this far on the outstanding play of Aaron Rodgers. The Pack are 9-1 ATS when Rodgers throws two or more TD’s this year.
  7. Look At How Pittsburgh Got Here
    • In the case of the Steelers, their style is all about tough D and running the ball down their opponent’s throat. When Pittsburgh running back Rashard Mendenhall gets 20 carries or more, the Steelers are 7-2 ATS this year.
  8. Forget About Past Matchups
    • The last time these two teams met was week 15 of the 2009 season and the Steelers escaped with a 37-36 victory. Both teams combined for more than 900 yards passing. It’s not too likely we’ll see a repeat of that type of defensive carnage. Pittsburgh and Green Bay ranked 1-2 in scoring defense this season.
  9. Cash In on Props
    • Think about the type of strategy each coach will use or how the game might play out and take advantage of the hundreds of props offered. For example, if you think the Packers lack the confidence to run against the Steelers, then look toward the over totals for Aaron Rodgers’ pass attempts and similar props.
  10. Go with your Gut
