The first race of the Triple Crown 2017, the Kentucky Derby was run on May 6, 2017. The winning horse was “Always Dreaming”, ridden by Jockey John R. Velazquez (trainer: Todd Pletcher; owners: Brooklyn Boyz Stables). It was an exciting race, run in heavy mud after the skies opened up and drenched the historic Churchill Downs race course. What started off as a tight race opened up in the quarter pull, when Always Dreaming ran away with it.

Belmont Stakes 2014! Bet Online Now!

The Belmont Stakes 2014 will take place on June 7th. That’s the good news. But the GREAT news is that you do not need to physically be there in order to get in the betting pool!

You can place your bets online, safely and legally. You have some great racebook options when it comes to online horse race betting.

The Belmont stakes is the final race of three races that comprise the Triple Crown, considered to be the most exciting, cream-of-the-crop Thoroughbred horse races in the world.

Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing

There’s nothing like the excitement of the Triple Crown. In case you don’t know, the Triple Crown consists of three thoroughbred horse races:

  1. Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky
  2. Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland
  3. Belmont Stakes 2014 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York

List of Belmont Stakes 2014 Contenders

  • California Chrome: California Chrome is now the most famous race horse in the world thanks to his ‘rags to riches’ history and impressive victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.
  • Commanding Curve: Leading up to the Kentucky Derby, there were doubts that this Louisiana Derby also-ran could step up in class. A second place finish in the Derby suggests that he is more than able.
  • Commissioner: Commissioner could do no better than third in three Kentucky Derby prep races, though he improved to second behind Tonalist in the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont.
  • Intense Holiday: Prior to the Kentucky Derby, there were questions about this thoroughbred’s ability to compete against a higher quality field. A 12th place finish suggests that the critics may have been right.
  • Kid Cruz: Finished 8th in the Preakness which was the first graded stakes race of his career. Trained by Linda Rice, she’s looking to become the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race.
  • Ride On Curlin: Trainer Billy Gowan has insisted all year long that Ride On Curlin has yet to “peak” and just needs the right jockey to give him the right ride. No word yet on a jockey for Belmont Stakes 2014.
  • Ring Weekend: The Graham Motion trained gelding missed the Kentucky Derby after running a fever but rebounded to finish 5th in the Preakness.
  • Samraat: Undefeated in his first five career starts before a second place finish in the Wood Memorial and a 5th place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
  • Tonalist: A lot of horse racing experts and handicappers are big on Tonalist based on his impressive win in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park on May 10th.
  • Wicked Strong: Wicked Strong became a legitimate Kentucky Derby contender following his upset win in the Wood Memorial.

The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby is right around the corner and the field has started to take shape.

Top Derby contenders so far are Orb, Verrazano, Goldencents and Java’s War. These fantastic thoroughbred horses are currently ranked 1 through 4 in the standings. Each one of these thoroughbreds have been dominant in their recent performances.

Last weekend we saw the second leg of the Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series come to its conclusion. Java’s War and Overanalyze earned their entry to the Kentucky Derby with wins in the Blue Grass Stakes and Arkansas Derby respectively. Other colts like Oxbow, Den’s Legacy and Uncaptured ran lackluster races and will be relying on the final two races of the Road to the Kentucky Derby to claim a gate at Churchill Downs on May 4th, 2013.

The Road to the Kentucky Derby

Those two races are part of the Wild Card round in the Road to the Kentucky Derby, but the points available in each race have diminished considerably. Only 20 points will be awarded to the winners of each Wild Card race and this is the last opportunity for colts on the points bubble to make their case and claim a gate in the Run for the Roses.

Those colts include the likes of Super ninety Nine, Charming Kitten and the aforementioned Den’s Legacy. Charming Kitten and Den’s Legacy ran last weekend, so it’s unlikely that they’ll race again in this weekend’s first Wild Card race. That means that they desperately need a good result in the second race or they will be missing from the starting gates at Churchill Downs on May 4.
